University of Toledo

The University of Toledo is one of the 14 public colleges in Ohio, and it is located on 1,400 acres of land in Toledo, OH. It was founded in 1872 as the Toledo University of Arts and Trades, but was closed six years later and turned over to the city. The school reopened as the Toledo Manual Training School in 1884, and over the years, changes from a vocational school into a university by the late 1800s.

The school remained in the center of Toledo until 1931, until the operations of the school moved to the Ottawa area of Toledo. Since then, today, the school includes more than 100 buildings and is a well-respected research university, specifically focused on the sciences, medicine, and engineering. There are more than 100,000 alumni from the University of Toledo living today, and more than 20,000 students are currently enrolled.

In 2006, the University of Toledo merged with the Medical University of Ohio, and is now known as the Health Science Campus. After that merger, Toledo became the state’s third largest public university. There are more than 250 academic programs offered by the university, and has a 19:1 student-to-faculty ratio. Several programs at the University of Toledo are rated nationally by U.S. News & World Reports. These include the business programs, which are rated in the top 300 schools in the nation, and the high school counselor program, which is ranked in the 250 schools in the nation.

University of Toledo Accreditation Details

The University of Toledo holds accreditation from the Higher Learning Commission. In addition to this, several individual programs are also accredited by other organizations. Some of the other programs at the University of Toledo are accredited by Association to Advance Collegiate Schools of Business International, the Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology, and the American Psychological Association, among others.

University of Toledo Application Requirements

For high school students that come to the University of Toledo for the first time, they must meet the following application requirements:

• Four years/units of English

• Four years/units of Math (Including Geometry and Algebra I and II)

• Three years/units of Natural Science

• Three years/units of Social Science

Applicants must also pass all sections of the Ohio Graduation Test if they are an in-state student. Otherwise, they must show proof that they have met all of the requirements of high school graduation. All applications are due to the school by July 31.

Direct-from-high school applicants who do not meet these requirements might still be admitted based on the recommendation of the Provost.

Applicants must also submit ACT or SAT test scores and GPA information. The requirements are, as follows:

• 15 ACT or 830-860 SAT with a minimum of 2.5 GPA for unconditional direct admission

• 16 ACT or 870 SAT with a minimum of a 2.0 GPA for unconditional direct admission

• 15 ACT or 830 -860 SAT with a minimum of 2.0 GPA for admission subject to review

• 16 ACT or 870 SAT with less than a 2.0 GPA for admission subject to review

Depending on the ACT or SAT score, some students might be required to take placement tests before being placed in a course.

Students must also submit high school transcripts at the time of their application, and then they must submit an official high school transcript with a stamped graduation date after graduation from high school.

Some specific colleges at the University of Toledo have specific minimum entry requirements, as well. These include:

• College of Arts & Letters, including Psychology - 20 ACT or 1030 SAT and 2.5 GPA

• Bachelor of Business Administration - 25 ACT or 1220 SAT and 2.8 GPA

• Bioengineering B.S. - 28 ACT or 1320 SAT and 3.5 GPA

• Department of Exploratory Studies - 19 ACT or 990 SAT and 2.0 GPA

Tuition and Financial Aid

When compared to other universities in the immediate area, the University of Toledo has the fifth-lowest tuition. The university also offers scholarships and financial aid to students who qualify.

Tuition rates for the 2016-2017 school year at the University of Toledo are as follows:

• Ohio Resident - $9,242 (tuition) + $10,094 (room & board) = $19,336

• Out-of-State Resident - $18,580 (tuition) + $10,094 (room & board) = $28,674

The University of Toledo offers scholarships to both in and out-of-state students, and more than 85 percent of first year students receive financial assistance. In order to be eligible for this assistance, students must fill out and submit the FAFSA. Students can work with financial aid counselors to learn more about what types of financial aid might be appropriate for their needs.

Psychology and Counseling at the University of Toledo

The psychology and counseling programs at the University of Toledo are comprised of more than 500 undergraduate and 40 Ph.D. students. The goal of the department is to teach students how to be excellent researchers and professionals through the development of their scientific knowledge.

There are a number of courses available in the psychology department, and students are required to earn 34 semester hours in psychology courses and an additional 18 hours of elective courses. Some examples of the courses available to undergraduate psychology students include:

• Psychobiology

• Abnormal Psychology

• Social Psychology

• Cognitive Psychology

Students must also take a statistics course, research course and related courses, such as Fundamentals of Biology.

There is also an honors program for students of psychology at the University of Toledo. To qualify for this unique program, students must meet the following requirements by the end of their junior year:

• An overall 3.8 GPA

• A psychology course GPA of 3.4 or higher

• Two psychology department faculty recommendations

• A ‘B’ or higher grade in Statistics

Students who are in the undergraduate psychology program are involved in a rigorous training in the psychology field, and they are presented with both modern and historical research on human behavior. They are taught to think with a logical and critical mind, and to related to the psychology of people in their day to day lives.

There is also a doctoral program in psychology at the school, and the University of Toledo offers concentrations in clinical, cognitive, developmental, social, and psychobiology.
